Allianz Stock: Legal Headwinds and Strategic Tailwinds Collide

Allianz SE shares are trading within striking distance of their record high, seemingly unfazed by a mix of fresh legal challenges and strategic portfolio adjustments. The stock's resilience underscores investor focus on the insurer's robust capital returns and expansion into high-growth markets like India.
The company's capital return program is in full swing. Shareholders are set to vote on a proposed dividend of EUR 17.10 per share at the Annual General Meeting on May 7, marking a double-digit increase from the prior year. The ex-dividend date is scheduled for May 8. Concurrently, a share buyback program of up to EUR 2.5 billion continues, with over 1.1 million shares already repurchased since mid-March. This aggressive capital distribution is supported by a strong Solvency II capital ratio of 218%.
Simultaneously, Allianz is cementing its presence in India. The joint venture Allianz Jio Re received final regulatory approval from the IRDAI on March 12. Partnering with Jio Financial Services, the venture combines local market access with Allianz's global underwriting expertise. The partners have also signed non-binding agreements to establish two additional 50/50 joint ventures for life and non-life insurance, signaling a deep, integrated commitment to the market.
However, new legal pressure is mounting in Germany. The Consumer Advice Center of Baden-Württemberg has filed a lawsuit against Allianz Lebensversicherung, now before the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court. The case centers on controversial pension conversion factors, challenging the lack of a "symmetry obligation" that would require the insurer to raise benefits in prosperous times, not just cut them during crises. The lawsuit examines a sample of over 160 contracts, revealing a broader issue than initially communicated, affecting more than just policies written in 2006.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?
Away from its core insurance operations, Allianz is scaling back an infrastructure investment. The joint venture "Unsere Grüne Glasfaser" with Telefónica has halted a fiber-optic expansion in the Stuttgart metropolitan area. The decision affects eight municipalities and approximately 6,000 households, pulling back planned investments of around EUR 12 million. The venture is shifting its strategy for the next two years toward connecting existing customers, a step back from more ambitious plans to invest roughly EUR 5 billion by 2027.
Internally, the company is implementing stricter governance. The board will link executive compensation to more rigorous performance criteria, with details to be presented at the upcoming AGM. The operational profit target for 2026 is set at EUR 17.4 billion, with a tolerance band of EUR 1 billion in either direction. The AGM will also mark the departure of Supervisory Board Chairman Michael Diekmann.
Despite these crosscurrents, the share price remains robust. Trading around EUR 389, the stock shows a minimal daily loss and is up a strong twelve percent on a monthly basis. It holds steady near its all-time high of EUR 392.50, supported by a chart position roughly six percent above its 200-day moving average. With a Relative Strength Index of 43, the technical picture suggests the rally is neither overheated nor panicked, leaving investors focused squarely on the upcoming dividend and long-term growth drivers.
