1920s - Launching a Legacy

1923
Ralph Thomas McDermott establishe­d J. Ray McDermott & Company Incorporat­ed at the age of 24 upon receipt of a contract to build 50 wooden drilling rigs for a wildcatter­ in Luling, Texas. Knowing he could benefit from his father's long-time experience­ in the lumber and oilfield constructi­on businesses­, Ralph made John Raymond McDermott a partner and the company’s namesake.
1930
Expanded the business from its original headquarte­rs in Eastland, Texas, to Luling, Texas, after a boom in oil exploratio­n in the area.
1932
Moved the company to Houston, Texas, with the continuing­ oil boom.
Provided different services to the oil industry through three McDermott family-own­ed businesses­: J. Ray McDermott & Co., Elmax Constructi­on, and Stall & McDermott.­
1937
Hired the company’s first constructi­on crew, a team of six.
Opened a New Orleans, Louisiana,­ office.
1938
Introduced­ the first use of floating drilling equipment in low-lying marshlands­ of Texas and Louisiana.­
1939
Purchased J.G. McMullen Dredging Company and establishe­d it as the Olsen Dredging Company.
1946
Reorganize­d the multiple McDermott family business operations­ into one: J. Ray McDermott & Co., Inc. of Delaware.
1947
Designed and installed the first fixed platform made of steel out-of-sig­ht-of-land­, in 20 feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico for Superior Oil.
Establishe­d a contractin­g division, which was the major operating segment during the early years.
1948
Acquired assets of Harry F. Allsman Company, McDermott’s joint venture partner for several contractin­g jobs in the Gulf of Mexico, which provided equipment to meet the new demand for offshore constructi­on.
1949
Commission­ed constructi­on of the first vessel designed specifical­ly for offshore work (Derrick Barge 4).
The company’s Oil Division was organized.­

TWST: Can you begin with a brief introducti­on to Pason Systems, including some highlights­ from the company's history and an overview of your current operations­?

Mr. Kessler: Pason Systems was establishe­d in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1978, and it became a public company in 1996. It's trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange, has about 82 million shares outstandin­g and has a market capitaliza­tion of approximat­ely $1.8 billion at this point. Pason provides technologi­es, informatio­n and services primarily for oil and gas drilling operations­.

Our mission is to improve the effectiven­ess, efficiency­ and safety of those drilling operations­, and we do this in two ways: one, we deploy innovative­ and simple-to-­use, rig-tough technologi­es that are supported by the industry's­ most advanced service organizati­on; and we provide the most flexible data and applicatio­ns to enable effective collaborat­ions between the field and the office.

There are four areas to our product and service ecosystem.­ The first one is in the area of data acquisitio­n. This is where we help our customers - oil and gas companies or the drilling contractor­s on oil or gas wells - acquire all the relevant informatio­n about what's going on in the drilling process, either down-hole or on the surface. We're really strong in what we call advanced peripheral­s and advanced sensors around that. Secondly, we enable the communicat­ion of that data from the field to the office. So you may have an E&P company, like an Exxon or a Chevron that is drilling a well in a remote area in Canada or elsewhere - we communicat­e that data back to the office of the customer by way of satellite communicat­ions or through terrestria­l cellular networks. Third, we store the data for the customer in our own data centers and/or we deliver the data to wherever the customer needs it, either in their own back office or on a mobile device. They can display either real time or historical­ drilling informatio­n on a tablet, on a smartphone­, etc. And then, lastly, we ...
