WASHINGTON, Aug 31 (Reuters) - A surgically implanted hearing device that uses a new technology to convert sound waves into energy won approval from U.S. health officials on Thursday.
The Food and Drug Administration said it cleared the Vibrant Soundbridge for treating adults with moderate to severe nerve hearing loss, the most common type of impaired hearing.
San Jose, Calif.-based Symphonix Devices Inc. (NasdaqNM:SMPX - news) makes the device, which surgeons implant in the skull behind the ear.
Other hearing aids placed in the ear simply magnify sound. The new device converts sound into mechanical energy, which vibrates structures in the middle ear in a manner similar to normal sound. The brain interprets the vibrations as sound.
The FDA said clinical studies showed the Vibrant Soundbridge was ``reasonably safe and effective.'' Hearing with the implant was about equivalent to standard hearing aids, the FDA said.
The implant is less visible than other hearing aids and was not associated with problems such as ear wax and moisture, the FDA said.
Also, ``the patient does feel the (Symphonix) hearing aid is more comfortable,'' Dr. Sidney Jaffee, an FDA medical officer, said in an interview.
But the implant also carries safety risks, including problems associated with surgery.
In the clinical trials, 2 percent of patients reported that their hearing become worse, and 5 percent had long-term ear pain. Also, 2 percent had permanently altered taste and 16 percent had a permanent feeling of fullness in the ear, the FDA said.
Surgery to implant the device, done on an outpatient basis, takes between 90 minutes and two hours, Symphonix said in a press release.
Patients using the Soundbridge in the clinical trial reported ``improved sound clarity and quality, better overall fit and comfort, and perceived benefit in many listening situations as compared to their own hearing aids,'' the company's statement said.
Symphonix is conducting an 18-month follow-up study to evaluate the long-term safety and effectiveness of the implant, the FDA said.
Nerve hearing loss occurs when the hair cells or nerves in the inner ear become damaged, usually from loud noises, genetic factors or ageing.

Die von Symphonix Devices entwickelte Soundbridge (Schallbrücke) funktioniert im Mittelohr. Das Gerät simuliert und verstärkt die natürlichen Bewegungen der vibrierenden Gehörknöchelchen und verbessert dadurch die Qualität der Tonsignale, die das Innenohr und von dort aus das Gehirn erreichen.
Bei der Verwendung der Soundbridge bleibt der Gehörgang offen, es treten weder Okklusionen noch Druckempfindungen auf, und die örtliche Bestimmung des Schalls wird verbessert. So, hab jetzt auch welche eingelagert, leider nur für knapp unter 8, relativ teuer. Zu wieviel seid Ihr aufgrsprungen ?
Hab gerade mal die amerikanischen Boards durchgestoebert, die Stimmung ist erstaunlicherweise ziemlich schlecht, ziemlich viele shorties auf dem Zug. Habt ihr irgendwelche Infos, wann die wieder zahlen bringen bzw. wie die Flüsterschätzungen aussehen ?

Anstieg zum Schluss (fast 60 % in 30 min.)kam, weil sie von Joe Kernan auf CNBC erwähnt wurden. Das neue Produkt scheint wirklich gut zu sein, aber eine Firma, die im letzten Q bei 400000 $ Umsatz 8,4 mio. Verlust gemacht hat und jetzt in einer Woche wegen einer nicht ganz neuen Meldung 150 % zugelegt hat, ist mir zu heiss. Nachbörslich geht es auch schon wieder deutlich runter. Ich bin erstmal wieder raus, werde vielleicht später für 5-6 $ wieder reingehen, jetzt erst mal feiern....

nie zu gierig sein. Am Montag kommen die ganzen Shorties zurück die gestern gesqueesed wurden. Zumindest könnte es sein. Falls nicht hast Du halt weniger Gewinn...aber immer noch 40% an einem Tag. Darauf warte ich sonst wochenlang.

In USA ist es möglich Aktien leer zu verkaufen, wenn man denkt, dass der Kurs fällt. D.h. ich verkaufe Aktien, die ich gar nicht besitze, kaufe sie später zu einem niedrigeren Kurs wieder (diesmal wirklich) ein und bin mit der Bank pari mit einem fetten Gewinn.
Wenn jetzt wider Erwarten der Kurs steigt, werden die Shorties (Leerverkäufer) nervös, da sie ja der Bank die Aktien schulden und kaufen panisch ein, um den Verlust zu begrenzen. Oft ergibt sich dann eine hohe Dynamik, da dadurch wiederum der Kurs weiter steigt und so spricht man von einem Squeeze, da die Shorties praktisch aus dem Markt gepresst werden.

weil USA normalerweise um 15.30 startet aber heute zu ist wegen Labour Day.
In D. wird eben verkauft, weil man genau diese Entwicklung in USA vorraussieht. Ich würde abwarten bis Di. USA eröffnet und am Boden des Pullbacks einsteigen (Tippe so auf 7,5 - 7 US$, also 7,8€). Ab diesem Preis würde ich in D. wieder einsteigen.
