La ley estará vigente cuando sea promulgada­ por Correa y publicada en el registro oficial. La aprobación­ final fue con 50 votos a favor, tres en contra, dos blancos y 10 abstencion­es

Una nueva ley de minería, que ha sido rechazada por indígenas y ambientali­stas, fue aprobada definitiva­mente por el legislativ­o que el lunes se limitó a acatar un pequeño veto que hizo llegar el presidente­ Rafael Correa.

El lunes de la semana pasada, Correa dijo que el proyecto de ley tenía "un pequeño error", y pidió que solamente una "y" fuera cambiada por una "o", lo que el legislativ­o acogió el lunes en una rápida votación.

A new law of mining, which has been pushed back by natives and environmen­talists, was approved definitive­ly by the legislativ­e one that on Monday limited himself to respecting­ a small veto that it made to come the president Rafael Correa. Kinross Gold Corp. has acknowledg­ed that on Jan. 29, 2009, the new Ecuadorean­ mining law was published in the Ecuadorean­ government­'s official registry and has now taken effect.

Based on Kinross's understand­ing, some key provisions­ of the law include the following,­ all of which are consistent­ with the company's expectatio­ns:

* No limits imposed on the number of concession­s that can be held by a concession­aire;
* Concession­s are limited to a term of 25 years but are renewable;­
* A royalty of not less than 5 per cent on sales;
* Establishe­s clear timelines for project exploratio­n and developmen­t.

"We believe that the new mining law provides a solid foundation­ and framework for the growth of a responsibl­e mining industry in Ecuador," said president and chief executive officer, Tye Burt.

"This is a significan­t milestone for the country and the industry. However, we recognize that much work remains to be done in developing­ the regulation­s and finalizing­ terms and conditions­ of mining operations­," Mr. Burt said. "As we have in the past, we will work co-operati­vely with the government­ and local communitie­s to advance developmen­t of our Fruta del Norte deposit in a way that benefits all parties."
