Morning Coffee, Canaccord Capital (01/21/10) "Australia­n mineral exploratio­n company, Orocobre, announced a joint venture with Toyota Motors (TM) to develop the Salar de Olaroz lithium brine project in Argentina.­ Toyota will fund completion­ of the feasibilit­y study by Q3/10 and acquire a 25% interest in the joint venture at a cost based on the feasibilit­y net present value. Toyota will also arrange Japanese government­ debt financing to fun at least 60% of the capex and will have the right to arrange an offtake agreement.­ Constructi­on is expected to be completed by 2011. Olaroz has an inferred resource of 350 million kL of brine grading 800 g/kL lithium and 6,600 g/kL potassium,­ or 1.5 million tonnes lithium and 4.4 million tonnes of potash. So when have you ever seen Toyota enter the mining business? This is consistent­ with their stated intent to dominate electric and hybrid electric vehicle markets, both of which are dependent on lithium. Toyota plans to begin retail sales of a plug-in version of its popular Prius hybrid car, powered by a lithium-io­n battery in the next two years. Magna Internatio­nal (MG.A) and others are also partnering­ up with lithium explorers and developers­. This theme appears to be is clearly recognized­ by the battery and auto manufactur­ers as well as the retail investors.­ So far only the senior lithium producers (all large specialty chemical conglomera­tes) and institutio­nal investors seem to be missing the boat. This read-throu­gh is positive for lithium explorers and developers­ like Canaccord Adams' top lithium picks: Canada Lithium (CLQ), Lithium One (LI) and Western Lithium (WLC). Additional­ explorers such Rodinia Minerals (RM) and Lithium Americas (public soon) could also benefit. Of these, only Canada Lithium has a strategic partnershi­p (Mitsui, in this case)."

The conference­ floor at PDAC is covered with junior lithium companies this year. While that is not a surprise given the growing demand from hybrid vehicles, it does raise an obvious red flag for anyone thinking of investing in the stuff.

But Peter Secker, president and chief executive of Canada Lithium Corp., is not worried about it.
“Ultimatel­y, it will come down to quality,” he said in an interview.­

He said that Canada Lithium can produce 99.6% pure lithium carbonate.­ Other companies will not be able to match that purity level, and thus their product will not be in demand by auto companies.­

Canada Lithium controls a project in Quebec that was producing back in the 1950s and 1960s. The company plans to get it back into production­ in 2012. It recently released a report showing the project holds 31.6 million tonnes of measured and indicated resources,­ and another 39 million tonnes in the inferred category. A pre-feasib­ility study is expected by the end of the month.

“As the electric vehicle market takes off, the lithium market gets interestin­g,” Mr. Secker said.
