Kenya Wind power Farm Lake Turkana 300MW geplant

28.03.2014

Earlier this week the final critical step in raising the funds necessary for the construction of East Africa's biggest wind farm came to a close. Capping a 9 year process, which nearly floundered due to objections from the World Bank.
Joint Development Parties

   1.KP&P BV Africa
   2.Aldwych International Limited
   3.Wind Power A.S. (Vestas)
4.Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries (Norfund)
5.Danish Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU) Denmark
6.Finnish Fund for Industrial Cooperation Ltd (Finnfund)

The Project will comprise 365 wind turbines (each with a capacity of 850 kW), the associated overhead electric grid collection system and a high voltage substation.  The Project also includes upgrading of the existing road from Laisamis to the wind farm site, a distance of approximately 204km, as well as an access road network in and around the site for construction, operations and maintenance.  The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (Ketraco), with concessional funding from the Spanish Government, is constructing a double circuit 400kv, 428km transmission line to deliver the LTWP electricity along with power from other future plants to the national grid.

....  Vestas will provide the maintenance of the plant in contract with LTWP.   The power produced will be bought at a fixed price by Kenya Power (KPLC) over a 20-year period in accordance with the signed Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
The Government of Kenya’s Least Cost Development Power Plan shows that LTWP wind power will be the least cost power generation option available in the country along with geothermal power and at even less cost than the feed in tariff for other wind projects set at US$12 cents/kWh.
The LTWP tariff will be approximately 60% cheaper than thermal power plants

Once fully operational, the extended windfarm will be able to generate enough electricity to power around 170,000 homes.

Based on a sandbank once treacherous to sailing ships, the Burbo Bank’s combination of shallow waters and high winds make it an ideal site for a windfarm.

The Burbo Bank installation is one of two major offshore windfarms situated just off the North Wales coast. Around 30km to the west of Burbo Bank are the 170 turbines that form the Gwynt Y Môr windfarm, the second largest windfarm in the world.

Built by German power firm  RWE, construction work is expected to be completed later this year, at which point it will generate sufficient electricity to power 400,000 homes.

Once accused of dragging its feet when it comes to investment in off-shore power generation, the UK is now regarded as the world leader in offshore wind, with as much capacity already installed as the rest of the world combined.
..........

The turbines to be used in the extension at Burbo Bank will be the biggest in the world.

Mr Knowles said: ”They are a completely new design.”

The new turbines will produce double the amount of energy for each turbine compared to the existing turbines.

MHI Vestas has the contract to design and build these turbines and Mr Knowles is hopeful that the assembly work will take place at the Cammell Laird shipyard, as happened with the turbines installed at Gwynt Y Môr.

The city region has a track record in delivering these projects and the Mersey is recognised as a centre of excellence. In total, there will be about 500 turbines in the Irish Sea......

Vestas has installed the first V110-2.0 MW prototype turbine at a test site in Høvsøre, on the west coast of Jutland, Denmark. The turbine has produced the first kilowatt hour of electricity and will undergo an extensive test and verification programme to ensure reliability before full scale production commences prior to the first deliveries at the end of the year.

The V110-2.0 MW is built from the proven technology of Vestas’ 2 MW platform and features a larger rotor using 55m blades. The turbine is optimised for production on low wind sites, and increases annual energy production by up to 13.6% compared to the V100-1.8 MW on low wind sites.

Wende geschafft Vestas untermauert Trendwende mit überraschendem Quartalsgewinn

dpa-AFX
