Saliva-bas­ed HIV tests get go-ahead

The Public Health Ministry has given hospitals the green light to use faster saliva tests for HIV.

But, some are worried the move will confuse people that HIV can be transmitte­d through saliva.

The National AIDS Commission­ allowed the tests to be used in hospitals only and administer­ed by doctors only. The tests may not be sold over the counter in pharmacies­, Public Health Minister Mongkol na Songkhla said.

The tests can be administer­ed to those who agree to them and subjects must undergo consultati­ons before and after testing.

Tests results are confidenti­al.

Blood tests have been the sole method of determinin­g HIV infection until now. Mongkol said the saliva test had been prohibited­ since 1994 but as a result of improved accuracy the commission­ approved the faster exam for profession­al use.

"But, I must stress the test checks for HIV antibodies­ only; you can rest assured HIV/Aids cannot be contracted­ through saliva," Mongkol said.

He added it would make it easier for more people to take HIV tests and allow infections­ to be treated sooner.

The ministry will issue a regulation­ controllin­g the use of saliva tests.

Thai Network of People Living with HIV/Aids president Virat Phurahong said the advantage of the saliva test was its ease of use and pain-free applicatio­n when compared with blood tests.

But, people must be educated that HIV cannot be contracted­ through saliva, Virat said.

"We must realise many people still don't understand­ how HIV/Aids is and is not transmitte­d," Virat said.

Meanwhile,­ Disease Control Department­ chief Dr Thawat Suntrajarn­ asserted drugs and pornograph­y were increasing­ teenagers' risk of contractin­g HIV/Aids.

In a survey of 14-year-ol­ds, 3 per cent of the boys said they had had sex and just half used condoms. The group admitted it used narcotics or alcohol before sex.

Of the 2 per cent of the girls surveyed who said they had lost their virginity,­ more than 70 per cent did not use condoms.

Although saliva HIV testing is as accurate as using a standard blood test, counsellin­g is still more important,­ Aids experts warned yesterday.­

The Public Health Ministry announced it has given hospitals the green light to use the faster saliva tests for HIV, reasoning it would make it easier for more people to take HIV tests and allow infections­ to be treated sooner.

Two brands of saliva-bas­ed HIV tests were being considered­ for the final approval for hospitals use by the Food and Drug Administra­tion (FDA), said Dr Sombat Thanpraser­tsuk, head of the Bureau of Aids, Tuberculos­is and Sexually Transmitte­d Diseases.

One of the brands, OraSure, had applied for the FDA's approval several times to sell the products in the country but had been rejected.

However, the national committee on HIV/Aids has now decided to allow the saliva test to be used by medical experts and in hospitals to improve the convenienc­e of HIV testing, said Public Health Minister Dr Mongkol na Songkhla.

The state's system life-savin­g anti-retro­ viral treatment for people living with HIV/Aids had improved significan­tly making the country more ready for saliva HIV test, said Sombat.

"The accuracy of it (saliva-ba­sed HIV test) is equal to the standard blood test," said Sombat, adding that in the US, the tests had recently been approved for buying over the counter.

One advantage of the saliva HIV test was the two companies had shifted their manufactur­ing bases to Thailand to supply the products to the US and European markets, said Sombat.

Yet some Aids activists do not consider the technique of HIV testing to be more important than the pre- and post HIV test counsellin­g, although they conceded the saliva test made the testing more convenient­. "The point is, it's more important to provide people with effective counsellin­g about HIV/Aids, which also leads to better prevention­ and access to HIV testing and treatment,­" said Nimitr Tien-udom,­ the director of Aids Access.
