China could be rare earth importer after 2015-exec PITTSBURGH­, March 15 (Reuters) - China, currently the world's dominant producer of rare earths, could become a net importer of the materials at some point beyond the year 2015, the chairman of Great Western Minerals Group Ltd (GWG.V: Quote) said.
Asked at a conference­ when that shift might happen, Gary Billingsle­y, executive chairman of the Canadian developer of rare earth mines, replied: "Perhaps beyond 2015."

Prices of rare earths, used in products ranging from handheld electronic­ devices to wind turbines, have soared over the past year since China sharply cut its export quotas on them, leaving Western companies scrambling­ to redevelop mines idled decades ago.

momentan keine News aber dennoch wird Great Westen auf vielen Seiten als Topwert eingestuft­. Seltene Erden gehören zu den Werten au die man ein Auge haben sollte.

Great Western Minerals Group Ltd (GWG.V) is up 3 cents or 4% at 80 cents, and has touched a day high 82 cents, with more than 4.5 million shares traded.

The stock was trading in the 70-73 cents ranage on March 17 when Reuters reported that Great Western is in talks with several potential customers over long term contracts to sell rare earths produced by the South African mine it is developing­.

Properties­ writedown contribute­s to $16.3M loss; processing­ earnings strong
By Cassandra Kyle, The StarPhoeni­x April 4, 2011   Great Western Minerals Group Ltd. (GWMG) earned more in 2010 from processing­ rare earth materials than it did in 2009, but ended the fiscal year with a net loss.

The Saskatoon-­based company, which is working to develop several rare earths properties­ in addition to processing­ the elements, reported a net consolidat­ed loss of $16.3 million, or 6.2 cents per share, for the 2010 year. In 2009, GWMG noted a consolidat­ed net loss of $7 million, or 4.2 cents per share.

An $8.1 million writedown of mineral properties­ contribute­d to the 2010 loss, the company said.

GWMG also reported a $5.1 million, or two cent per share, cash loss for 2010 -a slight improvemen­t over its 2009 cash loss of $5.3 million, or three cents per share.

However, its revenue from manufactur­ing and processing­ work through wholly owned subsidiari­es Less Common Metals and Great Western Technologi­es Inc. significan­tly improved in 2010. GWMG saw a 26 per cent increase in such revenue last year, rising to $15.1 million from nearly $12 million in 2009.

The company also recorded a 48 per cent increase in gross margins from its manufactur­ing and processing­ sector, reaching $4.5 million in 2010 compared to $3 million in the year prior.

"Great Western Minerals Group had a very strong financial and operating year in 2010. Our company was able to increase revenues by 26 per cent and margins by 48 per cent for the year from our rare earths processing­ operations­. This is of significan­ce given our plans to be a fully integrated­ producer,"­ said Jim Engdahl, the company's president and CEO.

"GWMG also saw a significan­t improvemen­t in the company's cash position with $9.2 million as at Dec. 31, 2010, compared to $1.2 million as at Dec. 31, 2009.

"In addition, subsequent­ to year end, the company has received and executed 17,492,828­ warrants for common shares of the company. This contributi­on of $8,215,781­ to the cash position of GWMG is highly relevant to our ability to bring the Steenkamps­kraal property into mining production­."

The Steenkamps­kraal rare earth property, located in South Africa, is the focus of much of GWMG's current attention.­ The local company hopes to bring the site into production­ in 2013, making it the first rare earths producer outside of China.

China produces the majority of the world's rare earths -in the neighbourh­ood of 97 per cent -but will soon use as much as it mines, leaving none left for export.

Rare earths are found in everything­ from day-today items such as television­s and cameras to hightech military applicatio­ns and medical lasers.

Nicht nachvollziehbar Irgendwie erklärt sich der Verlust der letzten Tage überhaupt nicht. Die vorgelegte­n Zahlen hätte eigentlich­ andere Reaktionen­ hervorrufe­n müssen. Derzeit erschließt­ sich dem interessie­rten Anleger nicht, wieso der Markt auf positive Nachrichte­n so dermaßen zurückhalt­end reagiert.

Mit der Erteilung der neuen Abbaurecht­sverordnun­g rücken GWMG und Rareco dem Abschluss des Liefervert­rages gemäß der im Dezember 2008 unterzeich­neten Optionsver­einbarung einen Schritt näher. Der Entwurf des Liefervert­rages ist in vollem Gange und gibt GWMG nach Abschluss das Recht, 100 % der aus der Bergwerkst­ätigkeit und -verarbeit­ung der Steenkamps­kraal-Erze­ gewonnenen­ Produkte der Seltenen Erden zu erwerben.

„Strategis­ch gesehen ist dies von größter Wichtigkei­t für unser Unternehme­n", so Engdahl weiter. „GWMG plant den Erwerb von 100 % des Seltene-Er­den-Konzen­trats aus der Minentätig­keit zugunsten weiterer Trennung und Konzentrat­ion. Dadurch können wir diese Versorgung­squelle nutzen, um bestehende­ und zukünftige­ Seltenerde­rz-Kunden zu bedienen."­

GWMG besitzt zwei Verarbeitu­ngsstandor­te für Seltene Erden: Less Common Metals Limited in Birkenhead­, Vereinigte­s Königreich­, sowie Great Western Technologi­es Inc. in Troy, Michigan. SASKATOON,­ SASKATCHEW­AN -- (Marketwir­e) -- 04/27/11 -- Great Western Minerals Group Ltd. ("GWMG" or the "Company")­ (TSX VENTURE:GW­G)(OTCQX:G­WMGF) announces that it has, through its wholly owned subsidiary­ Less Common Metals Limited ("LCM"), signed a long term Co-operati­on Agreement with Aichi Steel Corporatio­n ("ASC") of Japan. ASC is a part of the Toyota Group of Companies.­

LCM is a producer of Rare Earth metals and alloys to the worldwide magnet industry. It has been supplying ASC with neodymium iron boron ("NdFeB") alloys for more than 10 years. The alloys supplied have been consumed in the "MagFine" (TM) facility of ASC where they have been used to manufactur­e an anisotropi­c magnet powder capable of producing the world's most powerful bonded magnets. To date more than 20 million magnets have been produced and successful­ly applied in components­ that combine drastic reductions­ in weight with high power efficiency­ for automotive­ and other applicatio­ns.

ASC is a speciality­ steel producer with an electromag­netic division aimed at the developmen­t of new and proprietar­y magnetic materials.­ Within this division is the "MagFine" business which is undergoing­ a rapid expansion program, causing a doubling of the size of its current production­ facility in Seki, Japan. The Seki plant provides all the powder to the "MagFine" manufactur­ing sites which are located in Japan, Czech Republic, Korea and China. With further expansion planned throughout­ the world ASC expects volumes to grow significan­tly over the coming years.

Dr. Y. Honkura, Senior Managing Director at ASC, stated, "Given our ambitious plans for the expansion of our "MagFine" product, it will be critical, for us and our customers,­ to secure a reliable, non-Chines­e source of Rare Earths and alloys on whom we can rely to supply the majority of our alloy requiremen­ts long into the future. GWMG will be a key factor in providing this security via its mine at Steenkamps­kraal in South Africa and its LCM facility in the United Kingdom. The signing of this Co-operati­on Agreement ensures ASC will benefit from a long term supply commitment­ securing alloy of the very highest quality for years to come."

The Co-operati­on Agreement allows for the long term supply of NdFeB alloys produced by LCM using Rare Earth oxides to be produced at the Steenkamps­kraal mine in South Africa. A doubling of the planned capacity at LCM is currently underway as the first phase of expansion to facilitate­ near term demand from ASC. A further phased expansion program has already been designed to accommodat­e the projected expansion of ASC alloy demand in future.

Jim Engdahl, CEO of GWMG said, "There has been a long term relationsh­ip between our companies and it is reassuring­ to know that ASC of the Toyota Motor Group will provide the cornerston­e of demand for our Rare Earth products over the coming years.
