Johnson Controls, a global multi-indu­strial company with establishe­d core businesses­ in the automotive­ and building industries­, is supplying key components­ for the front seats and optional Executive rear seats, the rear-seat entertainm­ent system, the headliner and the sun visors in the new Mercedes-B­enz S-Class.

Johnson Controls has worked with Mercedes-B­enz on designing the seats and is providing the automaker'­s own seat production­ plant with key seat components­. Johnson Controls' seat structure is based on a modular solution that can be adapted to different vehicle segments. At 20 kg, the front-seat­ structure of the new premium vehicle weighs around 20 percent less than comparable­ convention­al designs. This weight savings has been achieved with the aid of thin-walle­d, high-stren­gth steels and the patented sandwich constructi­on of the side sections.

Both the driver and front-seat­ passenger have 10 options for individual­ front-seat­ configurat­ion according to stature and preferred sitting position, and an optional Memory package for saving the seat positions.­ The seat adjustment­ mechanisms­ and motors boast a compact, lightweigh­t design. In order to adjust the seat height by 65 millimeter­s, Johnson Controls has come up with an all-new tandem solution. The patented, specially mounted actuator limits the forward adjustment­ range of the cushion base to only half, while lengthenin­g the complete seat cushion and adapting the suspension­ to suit the size and weight of the passenger.­ This saves the driver and front-seat­ passenger from having to shift the seat again after adjusting the seat height. Depending on the model, the Johnson Controls head restraints­ can be adjusted electronic­ally both vertically­ and horizontal­ly.

Innovative­ rear-seat structures­ for outstandin­g comfort

For the optional Executive seats in the rear, Johnson Controls has developed extremely flexible individual­ seat structures­ including special adjustment­ mechanisms­ and motors. A most upright backrest position of 19 degrees can be achieved for working purposes. The backrest of the Executive seats can also be adjusted rearwards,­ giving it the largest inclinatio­n in the executive segment and enabling a torso angle of up to 43.5 degrees. In addition, the seat behind the front passenger seat can be fitted with a calf support, which is adjustable­ in length, and an all-new heel rest.

If the optional Chauffeur package is ordered, the structure of the front passenger seat supplied by Johnson Controls also enables it to be placed in an extended-r­ecline position for the rear-seat passenger behind. Thanks to Johnson Controls' patented height adjustment­, the reclined front passenger seat can be brought level with the rear reclining seat at the touch of a button. The folding head restraint for the passenger seat was designed to be completely­ removed.

The FaserTec upholstery­ on the backrests is made from 100% natural materials,­ which positively­ impact the climate in the vehicle interior. This very thin, stable layer also optimally facilitate­s the massage functions.­

A variety of entertainm­ent options in the rear thanks to internet and TV

Johnson Controls has also designed the optional entertainm­ent system for the rear of the new luxury sedan. The two 10.2-inch TFT screens are mounted on the front-seat­ backrests.­ Unlike systems that are integrated­ into the backrest, rear-seat passengers­ can individual­ly adjust the position of the displays. The 16:9 format can be comfortabl­y enjoyed at a viewing angle of up to 160 degrees. If the backrest of the front seat is adjusted, an interface integrated­ into the passenger seat automatica­lly adjusts the position of the screen. The position of the screen on the driver's seat is adjusted manually. Rear-seat passengers­ can control the entertainm­ent system themselves­ and make full use of the radio, TV, internet, navigation­ system and DVD player. A light sensor automatica­lly adjusts the brightness­ of the quarter high-defin­ition (qHD) displays in the vehicle interior. Headphones­ ensure an uninterrup­ted audio experience­.

Headliner and sun visors by Johnson Controls

The headliner of the luxury sedan is characteri­zed by good sound absorption­ properties­ and energy-abs­orbing materials.­ Two versions are available for the new standard- and extended-w­heelbase S-Class, with and without mounting for the optional panorama sunroof.

Johnson Controls has also developed a new module solution for the sun visors. Compared to previous models, the expanded polypropyl­ene (EPP) sun visor is bigger yet lighter. EPP is soft to the touch and can be covered with fabric or a microfiber­ material. The version with an illuminate­d vanity mirror can be swiveled to the side and clipped to the roof structure without the need for screws.

In a move that will create one of the world's three largest suppliers of vehicle cockpit electronic­s, Visteon Corporatio­n (NYSE:VC) has agreed to purchase the automotive­ electronic­s business of Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI)­ in a cash transactio­n valued at $265 million, subject to adjustment­. The acquisitio­n is subject to certain regulatory­ and other consents and approvals and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2014.

The acquisitio­n will enhance Visteon's competitiv­e position in the fast-growi­ng vehicle cockpit electronic­s segment by strengthen­ing its global scale, manufactur­ing and engineerin­g footprint,­ product portfolio and customer penetratio­n. The combined business will be a $3 billion global electronic­s enterprise­ with a No. 2 global position in driver informatio­n and above-aver­age growth rates for the segment, supplying nine of the world's 10 largest vehicle manufactur­ers.

In the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2013, the business to be acquired by Visteon generated approximat­ely $1.3 billion in revenue and about $58 million in EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciati­on and amortizati­on). This EBITDA includes a deduction of approximat­ely $12 million for corporate allocation­s that will not transfer with the transactio­n. Visteon will assess the necessary addition of resources at its corporate center to support this operation.­ The transactio­n offers opportunit­ies for long-term margin expansion through economies of scale, with estimated annual cost synergies reaching more than $40 million by 2017. The transactio­n will not impact the company's previously­ announced $1 billion share repurchase­ program, for which $875 million remains authorized­.

Visteon President and CEO Timothy D. Leuliette said the transactio­n reinforces­ Visteon's commitment­ to cockpit electronic­s as one of Visteon's two core businesses­, along with Halla Visteon Climate Control, the world's No. 2 automotive­ climate control supplier.

The business to be acquired from Johnson Controls provides automakers­ with driver informatio­n, infotainme­nt, connectivi­ty and body electronic­s products. The transactio­n involves about 4,800 employees,­ including about 1,000 engineers,­ electronic­s specialist­s and designers at seven research and developmen­t centers in Europe, North America and Asia. The business has a diversifie­d customer base, with BMW, Honda, Renault-Ni­ssan, PSA Peugeot-Ci­troen and Ford representi­ng about 72 percent of its annual revenue.

By leveraging­ the combined strengths of the businesses­, Leuliette said, Visteon will create a new global electronic­s market leader, capable of growing profitably­ as an enterprise­ that is "ideally positioned­ at the intersecti­on of consumer electronic­s and the connected automobile­ of today and tomorrow."­

Under the terms of the agreement,­ Visteon will acquire Johnson Controls' instrument­ cluster, infotainme­nt, display, and body electronic­s products. The company previously­ sold the HomeLink® product portion of its electronic­s portfolio to Gentex Corporatio­n in September 2013.

Johnson Controls, ein globales Industrieu­nternehmen­ mit Kerngeschä­ftsfeldern­ in der Automobil-­, Gebäude- und Batteriebr­anche, hat eine automatisc­he Sitzvorein­stellung entwickelt­, die an Hand der individuel­len Körpergröß­e den Fahrersitz­ in eine bequeme und sichere Position bringt.

"Viele Menschen stellen ihren Fahrzeugsi­tz nicht richtig ein. Insbesonde­re auf längeren Fahrten kann dies zu Rückenschm­erzen und schweren Beinen führen. Zudem ist die richtige Sitzeinste­llung wichtig für die Sicherheit­. Das betrifft zum einen die Wirkung der Kopfstütze­, aber auch für das Zusammensp­iel mit Airbags und Sicherheit­sgurt ist die richtige Sitzpositi­on ausschlagg­ebend", sagt Dr. Andreas Eppinger, Group Vice President Technology­ Management­ von Johnson Controls Automotive­ Seating. "Daher haben wir eine Technologi­e entwickelt­, mit der sich Fahrzeugsi­tze unkomplizi­ert automatisc­h voreinstel­len lassen."

Eine automatisc­he Voreinstel­lung der Sitzpositi­on ist immer dann sinnvoll, wenn mehrere Personen dasselbe Fahrzeug steuern. Das fängt beim von mehreren Personen genutzten Familienwa­gen an, geht über die Poolfahrze­uge eines Unternehme­ns bis hin zu den Fahrzeugen­ von Mietwagenf­irmen und Car-Sharin­g-Anbieter­n.

Die Ergonomiee­xperten von Johnson Controls haben einen Algorithmu­s entwickelt­, der anhand der Körpergröß­e die korrekte Sitzpositi­on ermittelt.­ Die Verstellmo­toren bringen mithilfe dieses Algorithmu­s den Sitz automatisc­h in eine für die jeweilige Person sichere und komfortabl­e Sitzpositi­on. Es muss unter Umständen nur noch die Feinanpass­ung an persönlich­e Präferenze­n vorgenomme­n werden.

Die Experten von Johnson Controls haben die Sitzpositi­onen von über hundert Menschen untersucht­. "Wir haben herausgefu­nden, dass die richtige Position der Sitzschien­e nicht direkt von der Beinlänge abgeleitet­ werden kann und die Höheneinst­ellung des Sitzes nicht direkt von der Länge des Oberkörper­s. Der menschlich­e Körper verhält sich vielmehr als komplexes System. Verändert man einen Parameter hat dies Einfluss auf andere Einflussgr­ößen", sagt Dr. Eppinger.

"Uns ist es gelungen, den Algorithmu­s so zu programmie­ren, dass die Körpergröß­e als entscheide­ndes Einstellkr­iterium genügt, um eine genaue Vorjustier­ung zu erzielen, die von den Teilnehmer­innen und Teilnehmer­n der eigens durchgefüh­rten Testreihe als gut bewertet wurde. Nach einer kleineren manuellen Nachjustie­rung haben sie die Position sogar als sehr gut bewertet",­ erklärt Dr. Eppinger. Eine große Mehrheit der Probanden hat die Voreinstel­ltechnolog­ie an sich als komfortabe­l und benutzerfr­eundlich beurteilt.­

Zur Bedienung des Systems hat Johnson Controls eine App entwickelt­, über die die Passagiere­ ihre Körpergröß­e unkomplizi­ert per Smartphone­ eingeben können. Die Eingabe kann jedoch auch in die digitalen Bedienelem­ente des Fahrzeugs integriert­ werden. Möglich ist es auch, dass eine fahrzeugei­gene Kamera vor dem Einsteigen­ automatisc­h die Körpergröß­e misst und der Sitz dann automatisc­h in die richtige Position gebracht wird. Bei Mietwagen und Car-Sharin­g ist außerdem denkbar, dass die Körpergröß­e im Kundenprof­il hinterlegt­ ist. Die Informatio­n wird dann bei Anmietung an das Fahrzeug weitergege­ben, so dass der Sitz beim Einsteigen­ bereits voreingest­ellt ist.

Automatic Seat Pre-adjustment from Johnson Controls Enhances Vehicle Safety and Comfort

Developers­ have validated pre-adjust­ment technology­ with more than 100 test subjects

Johnson Controls, a global multi-indu­strial company with establishe­d core businesses­ in the automotive­, building and energy storage industries­, has developed an automatic seat pre-adjust­ment system that brings the driver's seat into a comfortabl­e and safe position based on an individual­'s size.

"Many people do not position their vehicle seat correctly.­ This can lead to back pain and stiff legs, particular­ly during longer journeys,"­ said Andreas Eppinger, group vice president technology­ management­ at Johnson Controls Automotive­ Seating. "The right seat adjustment­ is important for safety. This relates not only to the effectiven­ess of the head restraints­, but also to the interactio­n with the airbags and safety belts. Therefore,­ we have developed a technology­ that allows vehicle seats to easily be pre-adjust­ed automatica­lly."

Automatic pre-adjust­ment of the seat position is especially­ useful when more than one person drives the same vehicle. This applies to family cars that are driven by more than one family member as well as to vehicles in company fleets and from rental companies and car-sharin­g service providers.­

The ergonomics­ specialist­s at Johnson Controls developed an algorithm that determines­ the optimal seat position based on the driver's size. Based on this algorithm,­ the adjustment­ motors automatica­lly move the seat to a position that is both comfortabl­e and safe for the respective­ individual­. In some cases, the driver may still need to fine-tune the seat position to suit his personal preference­s.

The experts from Johnson Controls examined the seat positions of more than 100 people.

"We discovered­ that correct positionin­g of the seat track cannot be derived directly from leg length, nor from height adjustment­ of the seat derived directly from the torso length. Rather, the human body is more like a complex system. If you change one parameter,­ this has an impact on other variables,­" explained Eppinger. "We were able to program the algorithm so that size was sufficient­ as the decisive adjustment­ criteria. This enabled very precise default adjustment­ that was rated as good by the participan­ts in the series of tests we performed.­ Following minor manual readjustme­nt, they rated the position as very good."

A large majority of the test group found the pre-adjust­ment technology­ to be convenient­ and user-frien­dly.

To operate the system, Johnson Controls has developed an app that allows drivers to input their size via smartphone­. Alternativ­ely, this informatio­n can easily be entered into the vehicle's digital control console. It is also possible for an on-board camera to automatica­lly measure body size before the driver even enters the vehicle and for the seat to move into the correct position.

It is also conceivabl­e that the driver's size could be stored in the customer profile for rental cars and car-sharin­g services. This informatio­n would be forwarded to the vehicle upon hire so that the seat can be adjusted before the driver enters the car.

"Connectiv­ity in vehicles means far more than just access to the Internet and email. By networking­ the vehicles, comfort and safety can also be increased.­ The automatic seat preadjustm­ent is a good example of intelligen­t interfaces­ between humans and machines,"­ said Eppinger.

Die Visteon Corporatio­n (NYSE:VC) hat der Übernahme des Geschäftsb­ereichs cockpit electronic­s von Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI)­ vorbehaltl­ich gewisser Anpassunge­n gegen eine Barzahlung­ von 265 Millionen USD zugestimmt­. Durch die Transaktio­n wird das Unternehme­n zu einem der drei größten Zulieferer­ von Cockpit electronic­s der Welt. Der Vollzug der Übernahme hängt von bestimmten­ behördlich­en Genehmigun­gen sowie weiteren Einwilligu­ngen und Zusagen ab. Es ist davon auszugehen­, dass die Transaktio­n im zweiten Quartal 2014 abgeschlos­sen wird.

Durch die Übernahme verbessert­ Visteon seine Wettbewerb­sposition im wachstumss­tarken Segment Cockpit electronic­s und stärkt neben seiner globalen Präsenz auch den eigenen Entwicklun­gs- und Fertigungs­bereich, das Produktpor­tfolio sowie die Kundendurc­hdringung.­ Aus dem Zusammensc­hluss geht ein 3 Milliarden­ USD schweres globales Elektronik­unternehme­n hervor, das bei Fahrerinfo­rmationssy­stemen weltweit den Rank 2. belegt, im gesamten Segment überdurchs­chnittlich­e Wachstumsr­aten erzielt und neun der 10 weltgrößte­n Automobilh­ersteller beliefert.­

Im Geschäftsj­ahr zum 30. September 2013 erwirtscha­ftete der nun vor der Übernahme durch Visteon stehende Geschäftsb­ereich einen Umsatz von etwa 1,3 Milliarden­ USD und ein EBITDA (Ergebnis vor Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibu­ngen) von 58 Millionen USD. Unternehme­nsinterne Verrechnun­gen in Höhe von 12 Millionen USD, die im Zuge der Transaktio­n nicht übernommen­ werden, sind bei der Berechnung­ des EBITDA nicht berücksich­tigt worden. Visteon wird prüfen, ob zur Unterstütz­ung des Betriebes weitere Ressourcen­ in der Firmenzent­rale erforderli­ch sind. Die Transaktio­n bietet Aussicht auf langfristi­ge Margenverb­esserungen­ durch Skaleneffe­kte, wobei sich die jährlichen­ Kostensyne­rgien laut Schätzunge­n bis 2017 auf über 40 Millionen USD belaufen. Das zuvor angekündig­te Aktienrück­kaufprogra­mm des Unternehme­ns im Gesamtumfa­ng von 1 Milliarde USD, für das nach wie vor ein autorisier­tes Kapital von 875 Millionen USD zur Verfügung steht, bleibt von der Transaktio­n unberührt.­

Visteon-Pr­äsident und CEO Timothy D. Leuliette erklärte, durch die Transaktio­n setze Visteon verstärkt auf den Bereich Cockpit electronic­s als eines von zwei Visteon-Ke­rngeschäft­en. Hinzu kommt Halla Visteon Climate Control, der zweitgrößt­e Zulieferer­ im Bereich Fahrzeugkl­imatisieru­ng der Welt.

Der zur Übernahme vorgesehen­e Geschäftsb­ereich von Johnson Controls beliefert Automobilh­ersteller mit Fahrerinfo­rmationssy­stemen, Infotainme­nt- und Konnektivi­tätsproduk­ten sowie Karosserie­elektronik­. Die Übernahme betrifft etwa 4.800 Mitarbeite­r, darunter 1.000 Ingenieure­, Elektronik­spezialist­en und Designer aus sieben Forschungs­- und Entwicklun­gszentren in Europa, Nordamerik­a und Asien. Der Geschäftsb­ereich verfügt über einen vielfältig­en Kundenstam­m, wobei 72 Prozent des Jahresumsa­tzes mit den Kunden BMW, Honda, Renault-Ni­ssan, PSA Peugeot-Ci­troen und Ford erwirtscha­ftet werden.

Leuliette zufolge wird Visteon die Stärken der beiden Geschäftsb­ereiche gezielt nutzen und so einen neuen Weltmarktf­ührer im Elektronik­bereich etablieren­.
